Lumsden

In Saskatchewan ist es flach haben sie gesagt. Da bekommt du nen richtig kalten Winter haben sie gesagt. Pustekuchen! Auf der Fahrt vom Busterminal in Regina zum Haus meiner Gastfamilie sah ich kaum Schnee, dafür aber ziemlich viele Hügel. Das war vor fast drei Wochen.
Inzwischen bin ich schon weitergezogen und mit dem Bus weiter nördlich gereist, nach Hudson Bay zu meinen neuen Gastgebern auf der Fir River Ranch, wo ich wahrscheinlich bis Anfang März bleiben werde. Danach habe ich bisher noch keine konkreten Pläne. Bevor ich mich aber mit dem beschäftige was noch kommt, berichte ich euch erst mal von meiner Zeit bei Wes, Laureen und Justin in Lumsden.

Sasketchewan is flat they said. You’ll get a proper and cold winter there they said. Ha! As if! On the ride from the bus terminal in Regina to the house of my host family I hardly saw any snow, but instead plenty of hills. That was almost three weeks ago.
In the meantime, I continued on and travelled further north to Hudson Bay and my new hosts on the Fir River Ranch, where I’ll probably stay until the beginning of March. After that I don’t have any concrete plans yet. But until I deal with what is yet to come, I’ll first tell you about my time with Wes, Laureen and Justin in Lusmden. Die zwei Wochen bei den LaBrashs gingen wirklich wie im Flug vorbei, ich wurde sofort in die Familie aufgenommen und habe mich sehr wohlgefühlt. Auf ihrer kleinen Farm bauen sie Saatgut und Kräuter an, produzieren Gewürze und haben neben dem obligatorischen Hofhund Boots und drei Katzen einige Hühner und Schafe.

Meine Aufgabe war unter anderem, Gewürze in kleine Verkaufsportionen abzupacken. Jetzt weiß ich, dass man dabei nicht nur ganz schön niesen muss, sondern die Nase auch nach fünf Minuten Abfüllen von „Grüner Ungarischen Paprika“ brennt! Gottseidank hab ich aber auch eine effektive, wenn auch weniger salonfähige Verteidigung gefunden:

Während meiner Zeit dort war aber nicht die Hofarbeit, sondern vielmehr Musik das dominante Thema. Justin, der Sohn der Familie, arbeitet zurzeit nämlich an seiner Karriere als Countrymusiker. Im letzten Sommer veröffentlichte er sein Debütalbum und Anfang Februar sein allererstes Musikvideo. Letzteres verband er mit einem Benefizkonzert, wo ich im Hintergrund mit anpacken konnte.

Und so ein echter Countrymusiker hat natürlich auch Cowboystiefel und einen dazu passenden Hut. Dass es aber eine solche Vielfalt an beidem in den entsprechenden Läden gibt, hätte ich wirklich nicht gedacht!

Zum Abschluss gibt es für euch nicht nur ein paar hübsche Landschaftsfotos, sondern auch noch eine frohe Botschaft: Ich habe mein Rückflugticket gebucht und werde am 1. Juni wieder europäischen Boden betreten!

The two weeks with the LaBrashs really passed by in a flash, I immediately was welcomed into the family and felt very comfortable. On their small farm they grow seeds and herbs, produce spices and in addition to the obligatory yard dog Boots and three cats they have a few chickens and sheep. Amongst others one of my jobs was to bag spices into small portions for sale. Now I know not only, that this makes you sneeze like crazy, but also that after five minutes into bagging „Green Hungarian Pepper“ the nose starts to burn! Thank God I also found a pretty effective yet less presentable defense.

During my time there farm work was not the dominant topic, but rather music. Justin, the son, is currently working on his career as a country musician. Last summer he released his debut album and in beginning of February his very first music video. He combined the release of the latter with a charity concert, where I could help out as well.

And of course a real Country musician has a pair of cowboy boots and a matching hat. But I never thought that they have such a huge variety in those kinds of shops!

Before I wrap this post up with some nice landscape photos, I have some good news: I booked my flight home and will set foot on European soil again on June 1st!
